1. Introduction
The U-WIN Portal (Universal Immunization WIN) is a citizen-centric digital platform launched by the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare (MoHFW) to digitise all vaccination services provided under the Universal Immunization Programme (UIP). Developed on the successful Co-WIN architecture, the U-WIN Portal creates a name-based electronic registry of pregnant women and children (0–16 years) and digitally records every vaccination event. The portal was launched nationwide on 7 January 2025 after successful pilot implementation in selected districts.
The portal remains in the news because it has significantly strengthened India’s immunisation programme. According to the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, during 2025, more than 8.01 crore beneficiaries were registered on U-WIN, digital QR code-based vaccination certificates were issued after every vaccination, and over 29.42 crore SMS reminders were sent to beneficiaries for timely immunisation.

3. Significance, Challenges and Way Forward
The U-WIN Portal is a major step towards Digital Public Health Infrastructure. It enhances immunisation coverage, reduces duplication of records, improves tracking of beneficiaries who migrate between states and strengthens monitoring under the Universal Immunization Programme. Digital certificates eliminate dependence on paper vaccination cards, while automated reminders help improve completion of the immunisation schedule. The platform also provides reliable real-time data for policymakers and programme managers, contributing to India’s goal of achieving Universal Immunization Coverage.
However, challenges remain in the form of digital literacy, internet connectivity in remote areas, Aadhaar and mobile number linkage issues, data privacy concerns, and capacity building of frontline health workers. Going forward, strengthening digital infrastructure, improving awareness, ensuring cybersecurity, integrating the U-WIN Portal with other national health platforms and expanding last-mile connectivity will be essential for achieving universal immunisation and reducing vaccine-preventable diseases in India.
