1. Introduction
The Prime Minister Internship Scheme (PMIS) was announced in the Union Budget 2024–25 as part of the Prime Minister’s package of five schemes for employment, skilling and opportunities for youth. The PM Internship Scheme is implemented by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) with the objective of providing one crore internship opportunities over five years in the top 500 companies of India, thereby bridging the gap between classroom education and industry requirements.
The Scheme offers a 12-month internship that provides real-life business exposure across sectors such as automobiles, banking, financial services, oil & gas, hospitality, manufacturing, FMCG and infrastructure. It is targeted at youth aged 21–24 years who are not engaged in full-time employment or full-time education. The pilot phase launched in October 2024 initially targeted 1.25 lakh internship opportunities across the country.
The PM Internship Scheme remains in the news because the Government has expanded the pilot phase by reopening applications in multiple rounds and encouraging greater participation from leading companies. It is regarded as a key initiative for improving youth employability and creating an industry-ready workforce under the vision of Viksit Bharat @2047.

2. Objectives and Key Features
The primary objective of the PM Internship Scheme is to enhance the employability of young Indians by providing practical workplace experience in India’s leading companies. The scheme seeks to improve industry-relevant skills, facilitate the transition from education to employment, strengthen industry-academia linkages and create a skilled workforce for India’s growing economy. It also aims to increase participation of youth from diverse socio-economic backgrounds in the formal corporate sector.
The scheme provides a 12-month internship in the top 500 companies identified primarily on the basis of their average Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) expenditure. Eligible candidates are Indian citizens aged 21–24 years who are not pursuing full-time education or employment. Interns receive monthly financial assistance of ₹5,000, comprising ₹4,500 from the Government through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) and ₹500 from the participating company through CSR funds. In addition, each intern receives a one-time joining grant of ₹6,000. Interns are also covered under Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJJBY) and Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY) during the internship period. The PM Internship Scheme therefore combines workplace exposure with financial support and social security coverage.

3. Significance, Challenges and Way Forward
The PM Internship Scheme addresses one of India’s major labour market challenges—the gap between academic qualifications and industry requirements. By providing structured workplace exposure, it enhances practical skills, improves employability, familiarises youth with corporate work culture and creates a pipeline of industry-ready manpower. The scheme also supports the objectives of Skill India, Make in India, Digital India and employment-led economic growth. Over the long term, the target of one crore internships can significantly strengthen India’s human capital and demographic dividend.
However, the scheme may face challenges such as limited awareness among eligible youth, uneven participation by companies, regional disparities in internship opportunities and uncertainty regarding post-internship employment. Going forward, wider industry participation, improved outreach, better monitoring, stronger industry-academia collaboration and regular assessment of internship outcomes will be essential to maximise the scheme’s impact and make Indian youth more employable in an increasingly competitive global economy. The PM Internship Scheme can therefore play an important role in strengthening India’s transition from education to employment.
