2. Applications of Artificial Intelligence in Defence
Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR)
AI processes large volumes of data collected from satellites, drones, radars, sensors, and surveillance cameras to detect suspicious activities in real time. It can identify enemy movement, classify military vehicles, and monitor border infiltration much faster than human operators. For example, the Indian Army is deploying AI-enabled surveillance systems along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) and Line of Control (LoC) for continuous monitoring. Cyber Defence and Electronic Warfare
Military networks face continuous threats from cyberattacks, malware, and electronic interference. AI-based cybersecurity systems can detect abnormal network activities, identify cyber intrusions, and respond automatically before significant damage occurs. AI is also used in electronic warfare for signal intelligence, radar analysis, communication jamming, and identifying hostile electronic emissions. These applications are an important part of AI in Indian defence.
Logistics and Predictive Maintenance
AI helps optimise military logistics by forecasting the demand for fuel, ammunition, food, and spare parts, ensuring timely supply to operational units. It also supports predictive maintenance, where AI analyses sensor data to identify faults before equipment fails. For example, AI can predict maintenance requirements for fighter aircraft, tanks, naval warships, and helicopters, reducing downtime and maintenance costs while improving operational readiness.
Training and Simulation
AI-powered simulators create realistic battlefield environments for training soldiers, pilots, and naval personnel without the cost and risks of live exercises. AI can also generate dynamic combat scenarios based on the trainee’s performance, improving decision-making and tactical skills under different battlefield conditions.
Precision Weapons and Target Recognition
AI enhances the accuracy of precision-guided weapons by automatically identifying and tracking targets using computer vision and sensor data. It helps distinguish military targets from civilian objects, reducing collateral damage. Several countries, including the United States and Israel, are increasingly integrating AI into precision strike systems and missile guidance technologies. Such developments demonstrate the growing importance of AI and modern warfare.
Border Management and Internal Security
AI is being used to strengthen border security through smart surveillance systems, facial recognition, intelligent cameras, and drone-based monitoring. Along India’s borders, AI assists security forces in detecting infiltration, illegal movement, and smuggling activities. AI is also increasingly used for critical infrastructure protection, crowd management, and anti-drone operations during major national events.

3. India’s AI Initiatives in Defence
- Defence AI Council (DAIC) and Defence AI Project Agency (DAIPA): Established by the Ministry of Defence in 2019 to formulate policies and accelerate the adoption of AI across the Armed Forces. DAIC provides strategic direction, while DAIPA coordinates AI implementation projects.
- AI Roadmap for Defence: Based on the recommendations of the Defence AI Task Force, India identified 70 defence-specific AI projects, of which around 40 have already been completed by Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs). These projects cover surveillance, autonomous systems, cyber defence, logistics, and battlefield management.
- DRDO’s AI Research: DRDO is developing AI technologies in areas such as computer vision, autonomous navigation, robotics, image analytics, natural language processing (NLP), underwater autonomous systems, and intelligent decision support systems to enhance combat effectiveness. - Promotion of Defence Start-ups: Through initiatives such as iDEX (Innovations for Defence Excellence) and the Technology Development Fund (TDF), the government is encouraging start-ups and MSMEs to develop AI-enabled drones, autonomous vehicles, surveillance systems, and counter-drone technologies. By April 2025, 632 start-ups and MSMEs had been engaged, resulting in 452 defence contracts.
- Operation Sindoor (2025): The operation demonstrated the growing role of AI-enabled surveillance, drones, precision weapons, sensor fusion, and integrated air defence systems in modern warfare. Following the operation, the Ministry of Defence emphasised strengthening capabilities in AI, autonomous systems, data analytics, and secure communication networks for future conflicts.
- Indian Army’s AI and Unmanned Systems Roadmap: The Army has prepared a roadmap for integrating AI, Machine Learning (ML), Big Data Analytics, drone swarms, facial recognition, satellite intelligence, and autonomous reconnaissance systems into operational planning and battlefield management, reflecting the shift towards technology-driven warfare.
4. Challenges, Ethical Concerns and Way Forward
Challenges
- Cybersecurity Risks: AI-enabled defence systems are vulnerable to hacking, malware, GPS spoofing, and electronic jamming, which can compromise military operations. As AI-enabled defence systems become more interconnected, securing them is essential for AI in Indian defence.
- Dependence on Foreign Technology: India still relies on imports for high-end semiconductor chips, GPUs, sensors, and advanced AI hardware, posing strategic vulnerabilities. Reducing this dependence is essential for achieving self-reliance in Artificial Intelligence in Defence.
- High Development Cost: Developing AI-powered autonomous systems, intelligent sensors, and computing infrastructure requires significant financial investment. The cost of developing advanced AI-enabled defence systems can therefore be a major constraint.
- Data and Infrastructure Requirements: AI systems need large volumes of high-quality military data, secure cloud infrastructure, and high-performance computing for effective functioning. Building such infrastructure is a crucial requirement for AI in Indian defence.
Ethical Concerns
- Autonomous Lethal Weapons: AI-enabled weapons capable of selecting and attacking targets without meaningful human intervention raise ethical and legal concerns. The growing role of Artificial Intelligence in military operations makes meaningful human control particularly important.
- Accountability: It is difficult to determine responsibility if an AI-based weapon makes an incorrect decision leading to civilian casualties. This is a major concern as AI and modern warfare become increasingly interconnected.

- Formulate comprehensive legal and ethical guidelines ensuring meaningful human control over AI-enabled weapon systems and address emerging concerns surrounding Artificial Intelligence in military applications.
- Increase investment in AI talent, semiconductor manufacturing, and high-performance computing infrastructure under Atmanirbhar Bharat, strengthening the technological foundation for AI in Indian defence and preparing India for the changing character of AI and modern warfare.
